How do I become a member?

To become a full member of the Crystal Lake Fire Department, one must be 18 years of age.
To become a Jr. member of the fire department, one must be 16 years of age and have a parent's permission. The Jr. members are assigned advisors to help them with any questions or problems they may have.
All members joining will be asked to meet with our executive board for an interview. The candidate will be asked to have finger printing done at the Town Hall's Resident Trooper's office. In addition, the candidate will need a physical exam by a department doctor before membership is granted. The candidate will have a 3 month probationary period, in which time, he/she must receive all the mandatory training, provided by the Crystal Lake Volunteer Fire Department (i.e. Blood Born Pathogen, Haz-Mat Awareness, etc...). At the end of the 3 month probationary period, the membership votes on whether to accept the candidate as a member.

Who pays for training?

The member will never be asked to pay for any training from his or her own monies. The department pays for all training, with the stipulation, that the member finishes the program. If the member drops out, he is expected to reimburse the department.

Is there an incentive program?

The Town of Ellington offers an incentive program for membes of all three emergency departments. There is a retirement incentive program in place now, and the three agencies are now working with the Town of Ellington to possibly expand the incentive program in the near future.

Do we provide Hep.B. Vaccines?

By law, the Crystal Lake Volunteer Fire Department provides all the necessary vaccines for Hep.B. at no expense to the member. If a member wishes not to receive the vaccines, he must sign a waiver stating this fact.

How much time is needed to be a volunteer firefighter?

A volunteer can put as much time into the service as he wishes, as long as all the mandatory training is reached. The first few years in the department can prove to be time-consuming, but the rewards far outshine the inconvenience.
